Under the laws of the State of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, only a Licensed Professional Engineer can offer engineering services to the general public. Some home inspection companies will tell you that they have an Engineer on staff, an Engineer reviews the reports, or even that an Engineer helped them set up the inspection system. The States of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut offer you a way to verify that you are receiving the services of a Licensed Professional Engineer.

Make sure that individual is a Licensed Professional Engineer or that the home inspection company is authorized to offer engineering services to the general public. If you are hiring an individual to perform a pre-purchase home or building inspection visit the State of New York Office of the Professions Online Verification Search Page to verify an individual’s registration status.
Just because a company uses the word
"Engineer" in its ad does not mean
it is authorized to offer
Engineering Services to the public.
