Leaders and Gutters
Gutters refer to the channels that collect water dripping off the roof. Leaders or downspouts refer to the pipes that carry the water to ground level.
Gutters help direct storm water to downspouts. These downspouts can drain away from a building, reducing the chance of water penetration into the basement. The gutters can also help reduce the amount of rain that falls on people as they walk into a building.
At one time, gutters were made of wood, and the downspouts made of steel, which required frequent maintenance. Wood gutters had to be painted with a special paint, and the steal downspouts rusted and developed holes. Today, most gutters and downspouts are made of aluminum (some are still made of copper), which requires minimal maintenance. (Old leaders and gutters can still develop holes). Heimer Engineering evaluates the leaders and gutters in the hose or building you are considering purchasing, and provides an expense analysis of needed repairs.
