Radon Gas
Radon
is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the radioactive
decay of the element radium. It usually enters a house or building
through openings in the ground, and its presence increases the risk
of lung cancer. The
EPA
recommends that all homes be tested for radon. However,
radon levels detected during past radon screening tests performed on
Long Island and New York City are generally lower than the EPA action
level for radon mitigation or further testing. In other areas,
elevated radon levels have been detected. Visit the
EPA
radon web site for more information.
If you live in an area where elevated radon levels are sometimes detected, it is strongly recommended that you have a radon screening test performed. If your house or building is in an area where radon levels are generally low, it is up to you to decide whether to have a radon screening preformed. Just because a building is in an area with typically low radon levels does not means that the radon level in the particular building you are purchasing will be low. Note that Heimer Engineering does not check for Radon as part of a pre-purchase inspection. You will need to contact an appropriate environmental testing firm to have a radon screening test performed.
